It may be that the Nokia E series sometimes suffers from Jan Brady syndrome as it gets overshadowed by the flashier members of its extended family--the Nokia N series (aka Marcia Brady)--but they're just as bright and deserve some recognition of its own. Traditionally, the E series devices have been very corporate centric and serious in design, but today, Nokia updates the line with the introduction of the Nokia E66 and Nokia E71, bringing with them a modernized look and a fresh set of features. Here's the breakdown:
Nokia E66: The successor to the Nokia E65, the E66 continues to offer a cool slider design but it's been trimmed down and comes in gray or white with steel accents. The smartphone also has "turn-to-full view," which is similar to the iPhone's accelerometer feature in that when you turn the device on its side, the screen orientation will automatically switch from portrait to landscape mode. You can also alternate between Business and Personal mode. In Business mode, you'll have all your productivity tools readily accessible on your home screen, such as e-mail, calendar, and documents. Meanwhile, when you switch to Personal view, you'll get access to your multimedia files, the Web, and so forth.
The Nokia E66 will continue to run the third edition of the S60 platform on the Symbian operating system and has integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP support). Plus, it now offers assisted GPS and U.S. 3G support (850/1900; HSDPA). Other goodies include a 3.2-megapixel camera, support for Nokia's Ovi Internet service, 110MB internal memory plus microSD slot (supports up to 8GB cards), and a 2.4-inch QVGA non-touch display.

Nokia E71: Now, the E71 represents the most dramatic design makeover of the two. Taking over for the Nokia E61i, the E71 is still very much a messaging-centric device with its full QWERTY keyboard but it's not as bulky or dull looking anymore. The smartphone measures 4.4 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide by 0.4 inch deep and weighs 4.4 ounces, compared to the E61i's dimensions of 4.6 inches tall by 2.7 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep and 5.3 ounces. The E71 will also come in gray or white, and have a 2.36-inch, 16 million-color QVGA display.
Feature wise, the Symbian smartphone supports Mail for Exchange, POP/IMAP accounts, and works with a number of push e-mail solutions, including Intellisync Wireless E-mail, BlackBerry Connect, GoodLink, Visto, and Seven Always-On Mail. The E71 will also have integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, HSDPA, assisted GPS, and the Business and Personal home screens.
Outlook: Both the Nokia E65 and E61i have a loyal following and garnered good user reviews, so I'm sure current owners will be interested in the upgrade. However, as with Nokia's other high-end phones, the Nokia E66 and Nokia E71 have not been picked up by a U.S. carrier and will only be sold as unlocked handsets, meaning they'll carry a steep price tag (pricing has not been finalized but we suspect somewhere in the $300 to $500 range) and thus, limit the reach of the smartphones. Still, the E66 and E71 are shaping up to be some strong workhorses for the business community, and we'll, of course, give them a workout when we get them in for review. Both mobiles are slated to be available in Q3 (around July/August) with the Nokia E71 expected to ship slightly ahead of the Nokia E66.

What you may not realize is that you have another option that solves these problems: IMAP.It can be a little confusing to learn about different ways to get email on your phone or in an email client such as Thunderbird or Outlook, but this breakdown of the key differences between POP and IMAP should help you decide which way to go.There are two ways your devices and clients can communicate with Gmail:1. A one-way communication path (POP). Your device asks us for data and pulls it from our servers -- but that's it. Things you do on your device have no effect on the server. Nokia Maps 2.0 is now ready to graduate from beta. Since it was announced back in February a lot of work has been done to correct bugs, improve and add new features.
Thanks for all the comments and constructive feedback! We have been reading carefully each and every comment and many of the improvement made to the final Maps 2.0 come from your input, for example:
“Difficult to see what licenses I have purchased” – we added a “My licenses”.“7 digit Postal Codes does not works in the UK” – works now.“Difficult to find how to plan a route” – new flat menu structure makes this easier.“I walk faster than GPS can keep up” – increased the GPS frequency“Cannot zoom to see route overview in navigation” – added manual zooming“Show longitude and latitude” – added in Details viewEtc.
The main new feature since the beta is Network based positioning. It will position you really fast, usually within 5 to 10 seconds. It works indoors, on a bus or train.Network based positioning cannot be used for navigation since it is not accurate enough. However it works just fine for showing where you are (roughly) on the map. A pink circle in the map shows the accuracy of the position. When GPS fix is achieved, this is used instead of the Network based position, and the pink ring disappears.Network based positioning is now enabled on all A-GPS enabled devices. (E90 users need to install new software update that will be available soon).
In addition to new features and functional improvements, we have expanded the navigable countries with New Zeeland, Venezuela and Chile. You can use Map Loader to get the latest maps.

Official Skype Beta Mobile Java J2ME client for Nokia

Skype has released an official beta version of their mobile client for Java J2ME mobile devices such as Nokia S60, Sony Ericsson UIQ, Motorola & Samsung. The application uses an Internet data connection for status, contact information and Skype chat (instant messaging). However, when you initiate a phone call (Skype Out) the application makes a voice call to a local server which then routes your call over the Internet (transfers calls from the PSTN network to the IP network). Similarly incoming calls (Skype In) are routed to your mobile phone over the PSTN network.

Key features of Skype for Java Mobiles include:

+ The software has three columns: Contacts, Chats, Events.+ It offers search as you type functionality (incremental search)+ If the application is running in the background, incoming chat messages are alerted by an audio signal.+ You can add multiple contacts to an IM chat session and set the active chat topic

In this beta version, anyone can receive calls, instant message and see who’s online. If you want to call phones, mobiles, or any of your Skype contacts, this is limited to people in Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden and UK. Also, as described earlier, this isn’t a Voip application since calls are routed through your operator’s PSTN network, resulting in local call charges.

Yesterday Google announced the rollout of free IMAP4 over SSL access for GMail. This allows you to keep your Gmail message state information such as whether or not a message has been read, replied to, or deleted synchronized across any IMAP4 client on desktop or mobile device such as Nokia S60, Windows Mobile, Windows Mail Desktop, iPhone, Sony Ericsson UIQ, Blackberry, Outlook 2003/2007, Thunderbird and Mac since these flags are stored on the server unlike POP3.
Here are a few resources to setup and configure IMAP4 over SSL for a multitude of desktop and mobile clients:

Windows Live Messenger For Nokia Eseries

Windows Live Messenger has quietly showed up in the Download Folder on Eseries devices in certain regions and with certain carriers.

The Windows Live Messenger client was initially released for a number of Nokia's NSeries devices. However, the client which supports Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Spaces and Live Search is now officially available for Eseries.

However, once again, it should be noted that distribution seemed to be tied to certain carriers (read SIM) and certain regions.
I have received reports that it is the SIM that decides whether Windows Live Messenger shows up as a download or not. Here are the step by step download screen shots for regions where the application is available.

You have to know that before applying this settings, i found 2-3 Wi-Fi networks in my house. But after this settings I found 5 Networks. But phone using more energy with this settings and it decreases your battery life. You can apply this somewhere you have to catch wi-fi networks
Home** is my own Wireless network. Before signal quality was %62 and it rised to %75. I tested it very carrefully. I waited 5 minutes to get best results;)
Let’s do it!

Select Connection> Wireless LAN
Options > Advanced Settings
Disable Auto Conf.
You may disable Power Saving but it will spend your battery more faster!!

Opera Mini 4 beta 2

Opera Mini 4.0 beta 2 is out and is much more stable then beta 1. Additional features besides Visual effects, full screen mode and Auto Zoom is Landscape mode.

I am a big fan of Opera Mini as it is far superior than the Safari browser in terms of faster browsing and relaibility.The Safari browser still has its memory full kink if you load a heavy site while Opera Mini with its text wrapping,fixed page width and now zoom in, mouse pointer, full screen and landscape mode is way ahead of Safari.

Wikipedia is one the first places I visit to search for information on the Internet (besides Google, of course). Unfortunately, the current Wikipedia is not “mobile” friendly. If you load Wikipedia home page using the built-in S60 Web browser, you would see something like below.

Personally, I hate doing horizontal scrolling. It’s quite annoying for me. There is a solution for this problem, for example using Opera Mini to load Wikipedia page.
Today, I read an interesting posting on Lifehacker.com about Top 10 Wikipedia Tricks. It mentioned a web site, called Wapedia (http://www.wapedia.mobi) that reformat Wikipedia pages to our mobile devices. As you can see in the screenshots below, the layout of Wikipedia page is much better than above.

To use Wapedia, simply run your S60 Web browser and type http://www.wapedia.mobi.

Facebook has become one of the most popular social networking service. According to its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook is growing at the rate of 3% every week. If you haven’t used Facebook yet; I really recommend trying it.
What can we do on Facebook from our mobile device? There are basically three things, i.e.:
Mobile Web. Browse Facebook web site from http://m.facebook.com.

Mobile Uploads. Upload notes and pictures by sending multimedia message to notes@facebook.com or photos@facebook.com. Most S60 devices are able to send multimedia message to an email address.

Mobile Texts. Update your status by sending text message to FBOOK (32665). You can also do many other things by sending text message, for example poke your friend and write to your friend’s wall. To update your status simply send text message started with “@” (see screenshot below).

Note that before using text message service, you have to register your phone number. Unfortunately, as of writing of this posting, only US and Canada numbers are supported.

Nokia Beta Labs has just released a new application, called Conversation. It is an application that allows us to follow conversations, organized by individual contacts. It is similar to the way we use IM (Instant Messaging) application. You can click a contact and see history of conversations that you had with that person.

You asked for it… fring now auto-roams between 3G & Wi-Fi! This means that even if you forget or can’t be bothered searching for Wi-Fi access points, you can still get the best call quality and biggest cost savings over Wi-Fi whenever in range of a recognized hotspot!
So what’s new here? Until now if you have a dual-device, you can choose to communicate over Wi-Fi whenever in a Wi-Fi zone. Now for the first time, fring automatically recognizes and logs you into Wi-Fi or 3G networks without you pressing a button or even thinking about it
How it works: You may have heard of auto-roaming out there, but we are pretty excited about this because compared with current services out there that are either limited to specific networks or still require you to play around quite a bit to switch between different networks, our auto-roaming switches you between any Wi-Fi and 3G/GPRS networks automatically without you having to do anything. For instance, when in a friendly Wi-Fi zone (those specific hotspots you have previously logged into), fring automatically recognizes it and auto-connects you. When you leave that zone, you will communicate over 3G. When you come back later for another cuppa coffee, fring will automatically operate over that Wi-Fi network without you even realizing. We don’t care who operates the network, or what type it is… as long as you’ve logged in before, fring will auto-kick in. Pretty cool, huh?
Who can auto-roam with fring? For now fring auto-roams on supported Nokia (Symbian 9.1 & 9.2) devices including some new additions so download or upgrade to this auto-roaming version now. To choose your preferred network (Wi-Fi first, 3G first, Wi-Fi only, 3G only, or “Always ask”), go to options –> settings –> connection manager –> settings. Your dual-mode fring supported handset will now auto-roam, so go ahead, walk around and check it out! Windows Mobile support is coming soon so stay tuned!

Unimessage UM Lite for Nokia e61

UM lite is one cool free application. Now you can forward your sms’s as an email on your Nokia e61i through this application. This was a serious function missing in the phone, remember all the funny sms’s you receive from your friends but you could not email them to a friend or email a copy of an important sms, now you can do that with Unimessage.

It took me a minute to download and install it when I clicked on the application I could see all my sms’s in my inbox that had the option either to let me move between my sms inbox, drafts and sentbox. After clicking on the options you have the choice to forward any sms from any of your pop email accounts or as a mms. The major feature which I thought was missing was a mark all and send as email this will be very useful if we could forward all our sms’s to our mailbox to keep a backup or a copy of our sms’s. I will email the developers if they can make this fucntion in the new releases that will be great. I usually delete my sms’s since it slows down messaging a lot.

How does it work? There are two applications of wwigo. The first one runs on the PC; the second one runs on the device. They communicate each other via Bluetooth.

There is a new version of Mail For Exchange available.
The new version, Mail For Exchange 1.6 includes support for Nokia E90, adds a few new features and fixes a number of bugs.
M4E 1.6 supports Eseries devices with firmware 1.610.04.02 or later.
From the release notes:
NEW FEATURES IN THIS RELEASE • Support for synchronizing Japanese Yomi and VoIP contact fields.
• OMA DM can set “Always-On” even when password is missing from DM settings. User can add password manually, or at first manual sync attempt user will be prompted for password. Password will be saved.
• PointSec interoperability 4.

ERROR CORRECTIONS• Ensure that user’s Exchange calendar is not wiped if the device calendar is deleted on the device.
• Support Manual Syncs using v2.0 of the Activesync protocol if server sends an incomplete OPTIONS response.
• Fix empty subject field error for forwarded messages with attachment. • Fix to correctly display non-English message header entries.

Google quietly added a new mobile version of Google Calendar to the site yesterday. The new mobile-optimized version of Google Calendar can be found by pointing your phone to calendar.google.com.
The Google Blog reports that the mobile version of Calendar will display “your agenda of upcoming events, complete with details like date, time, location, description, and guest list.”
The new site is nice, but I can’t help thinking that the mobile version should have been available from the beginning. For those of us lacking a cheap data plan for our mobile devices, you can still configure Google Calendar to send SMS alerts to your phone which is better than nothing.

With so many chat clients available I wanted one that could only handle google chat. As my msn messenger list is too long we decided internally to have a close knit group to use google chat for work only. I found a really neat software called Nimbus. What I really like about the software is its alert mode which is loud and clear and the screen automatically pop's up whenever you have a new message. You can do mulitple chat without a hitch. It has talk capability also but I really had no need to use it. I strongly recommend you try it if you are looking for a no nonsense chat software supporting google. When connecting to Gmail, does the following message ring a bell - "This site has sent an untrusted certificate. Continue anyway?" If it does you might want to consider changing your settings for Gmail on your Nokia E61.

If you change your outgoing mail server setting for gmail from "smtp.gmail.com" to smtp.googlemail.com" and your incoming mail server setting from "pop.gmail.com" to "pop.googlemail.com" on your Nokia E61 you will no longer recieve the untrusted certificate warning. You can now connect directly to gmail from your Nokia E61 without having the message pop-up. Four seconds and one click saved per connection

Two readers were kind enough to point out alternative solutions to the problem of the "untrusted certificate" warning when connecting to Gmail, as described below .
Thomas Mango at Trikenit pointed out thiss solution by Kevin Henrikson. Rafe from the indispensable site All About Symbian suggested a similar solution which I outlined below.
Go to the following URL from the browser of your Nokia E61 (remove the space between "certificates/ certificates" I added that for cosmetic reasons to the blog) https://www.geotrust.com/resources/root certificates certificates/Equifax_Secure_Certificate_Authority_DER.cer or send the URL to yourself in an SMS and access it through the browser.

When you do this you will get an "untrusted certificate" warning but just continue. Save the certificate, you will receive a certificate warning but continue.
Press the joystick to check the two "Certificate Uses" checkboxes and confirm with OK.
Voila - you can now connect to Gmail with the POP and SMTP setting as pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com without getting the "untrusted certificate" warning.
